Proverbs (2009) Part 7: Addiction

idols give us false promises.

martin luther: idolatry is a heart issue.
Ask and examine your heart diligently, and you will find whether it cleaves to God alone or not. If you have a heart that can expect of Him nothing but what is good, especially in want and distress, and that, moreover renounces and forsakes everything that is not God, then you have the only true God. If on the contrary, it cleaves to anything else, of which it expects more good and help than of God, and does not take refuge in Him, but in adversity flees from Him, then you have an idol, another god.
we use the language of addiction in our culture.
the bible uses the language of idolatry, habitual sin, and self chosen slavery.
culture is trying to change the behavior.
the bible is trying to change the person.
out of a new heart comes a new life.

the fear of the Lord is the answer to addiction and idolatry.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. Proverbs 1:7
Deep reverence and respect. Obey God because He tells the truth, idols lie. I want to be wise and not a fool.
Dear children, keep yourselves from idols. 1 John 5:21
Martin Luther - if you follow the first two commandments, you wont break the other eight.
